The problem
Online news is fast, emotionally charged, and rarely connected to the science underneath it. Readers meet strong claims about politics, health, and society with no easy way to check them against peer-reviewed research, while comment sections amplify opinion over evidence. The result is a trust gap: it's hard to tell which perspectives are grounded in real research and which are just loud.

The process
Proem takes any piece of online content and enriches it with scientific insights drawn from the latest research papers. I worked on the product design and front end, shaping how an AI 'science bot' joins the conversation around an article: it answers reader questions, surfaces relevant findings, and cites the studies behind them. The reading experience keeps the original article intact while layering in research-backed context and discussion, so complex ideas become accessible without being dumbed down.

The outcome
We launched Proem News to the public, but ultimately closed it down: not enough people wanted science-enriched news. The honest lesson was that most readers treat news as entertainment rather than knowledge, so the appetite for research-backed depth was smaller than we'd hoped.
